Since one of the treatment steps for kicking an addiction requires some sort of a belief in a god or a higher power, what do atheists do to kick an addiction?

Atheists are usually welcome in AA without having to ascribe their recovery to a higher power but... This is the reason that Rational Recovery was founded. Skip it. Alternatively, use a treatment that isn't religious. There are many secular organizations for substance abuse treatment.
