Question: Why do alcoholics need alcohol rehabilitation?
(Posted by: destiney t on 2007-07-17 00:01:36)
I know a lot of people who drink alcohol but are still pretty much normal. I mean, they don't need to be rehabilitated. So I was just wondering why some people opt to go to those centers and waste away their money. |

Alcoholics are different from persons who just drink alcohol. Alcohol, when drunk in moderation, can be harmless. However, if the person has already developed alcoholism, there comes the big difference as alcoholism is a progressive illness. Like other illnesses, this, of course, must be treated. That is why alcoholics need alcohol rehabilitation. This is not a waste of money. The cost of staying as an alcoholic is even greater, because not only would the person be spending more and more on alcohol, he would also have to go through losing his normal life and becoming susceptible to being violent. The cost of rehabilitation is well worth it because that's what it takes to save a life. |

In my opinion it's to keep themselves away from the alcohol. I also think that if a person is serious about quiting...they can do it on their own. |

Usually the people who go are wasting away their lives (AND money) on other things - like being drunk all of the time. |

My mother was an alcoholic - which is considered an illness and requires treatment. An alcoholic cannot stop drinking without treatment/ rehabilitation. Often they get to the point they can't even go for a few hours without a drink and will even drink such things as cough syrup and rubbing alcohol when they become desperate. Alcoholism killed my mother because she refused to seek treatment. It is a very different thing from people who just enjoy drinking but are not in desperate *need* to drink. |

People in AA meetings quip, "People spend $50,000 to learn that they have to go to AA meetings (which are free). " There's a little more to it, but not much. The biggest part of rehab is physically keeping a person away from alcohol and drugs for the toughest time, the first 30 days. Over 95% of rehabs are 12step-based (AA). The rest of it is like AA boot camp. Considering that AA has about a 5% success rate, it doesn't seem like a wise investment. Rehabs are a for-profit con job. |
