Question: Why should a woman stop drinking alcohol or undergo alcohol treatment first before deciding to get pregnant?

One of my closest girl friends married last month and promptly expressed her desired to have a baby. I am bothered because she's an alcoholic, though she doesn't want to admit it. When I advised her to undergo treatment first, she just fired back another question to me. |

Show her medical reports on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. If that doesn't scare her into straightening up her act, I don't know what will. |

Because the alcohol harms the baby. The baby will end up born with a syndrome called "fetal alcohol syndrome " that means it is addicted to alcohol. The baby will be very ill. This friend of yours should be sterilized. If she feels that way about a baby (which is not much), she is not responsible nor mature enough to have any! |

It isn't healthy for her or the baby. Also, the addictive behavior that goes along with alcholism is dangerous. I have also heard that it is harder to concieve when you drink regularly. |

That a good question, but it can cause alot of trouble because the baby can be brain damage and in some cases they can be deformed and sometimes have mental/ physical illness. |

Your advise was sound and good, which shows that you care for your friend as well for the baby she would want to carry. It would be very dangerous for a fetus if the mother remains to be a chronic drinker or alcoholic. He might suffer fetal alcohol syndrome, which are permanent defects caused by the excessive alcohol intake of his mom during pregnancy. Bear in mind that whatever the mom eats or drinks is shared with her baby. Hence, drinking alcoholic beverages is also equivalent to letting the fetus drink the same substance. Alcohol can cross the placenta and make the baby addicted, too. This will greatly affect his immune system, growth, and other internal organs. |
