Question: What alcohol treatment strategies make sense in the uk?

Is abstinence too exacting a standard in Britain? Drinking is so normalised, such a part of everyday culture, that not participating would cost you your social life... How do people struggling with alcohol issues cope in the UK? What are methods that work? I'd be grateful to hear about the effectiveness of traditional (AA) and alternative (eg harm reduction) approaches in the UK context. Theoretical discussion and personal experience very welcome... (secular approaches in particular).
