Question: How do you help friends with drug addictions?
(Posted by: Chris T on 2010-02-13 19:51:12)
It seems like most of my life ive been around drug addiction.like my friends are on cocaine, painkillers, just about most drugs you can think of.lost a friend a long time ago to meth.it caused him to have schizophrenia some crazy stuff to watch.still trying to figure out how to help. rehab is out of the question for the people i know that have these problems. i wasn't sure what category to put this in. they are not afraid to admit they have this problem.so it makes it a lot harder to convince them to stop.for the fact that its in there life style daily. yeah the funny thing is its more than one friend.i used to do drugs, but because of this main reason i stopped.i just smoked weed which is fine with me.im sober all the way because of drug addicts. it just seems like it was meant for me to be around drug addicts for some reason lol.or maybe im a drug addict magnet.i know its nothing to joke about.thats how it seems. |

Listing a whole bunch of ways to help your friends is fine and dandy... on paper. The truth is there are very few things you can do to get them to stop on your own. Majority of the solution is in their hands- only they can say when they will stop. They have to be mentally ready to make a huge change in their life. However, you as their friend can help to at least slow them down or limit their usage. Start with expressing to them how it makes you feel when you know they're high, and ask them questions about it. You can then have them make a promise that they will be sober when they are around you, and they will not get you involved with anything drug related. This will not only limit their use, but it will maintain your friendships, which is very important if you want to help them recover! It will also open a door of opportunity to allow you to take more steps to helping them recover. |

I personally believe you cant tell them or make them do anything. They have to firgure it out for themselves, even if it takes 50 years |

Having a psychiatrist around to monitor your friend never hurts. you also might want to contact your local authorities if they do not know yet. i know its bad to be a snitch; but by letting some one know you could be saving their lives |

The only way you can help them is if they want to help themselves and they want to change. You cannot just make them change, it won't work. Meanwhile, if you are a person of faith, you can pray for them. |

I know how it is when your friends take drugs & your worried sick about them, you want to help. You sounds like you been through a lot seeing your friends doing this to themselves. First, don't take any drugs if they offer you any. You can try to tell them how you feel. It's hard to know what to do. You can go talk to someone or find help. |

Many cases of drug addiction started from mere curiosity. An error in the use of a prescription drug, for example, could have led to experimentation. In a typical case, the person probably enjoyed the euphoria he experienced when he first took the drug, and this made him use the drug repeatedly. This is the same reason why parents have to be extra careful about the drugs they keep in their medicine chests. |
