Drug Alcohol: Methadone Facts

Question: Help! why do people who are addicted to drugs,alcohol,or smoking want others (even friends) to do it with them?

Even though they know the hell that especially drugs can cause a person? I drink and smoke and I know that I have been somewhat guilty of this and I have a friend who is addicted to pain killers who is in a round about way doing this. We are very close friends and I love him and he loves me but he's sick. Recently he asked me if I wanted some Loritab (I have used them in the past recreationally but not habitually) and it hurts me because he knows how terrible it is (he now also abuses Oxycontin) but offered them to me anyway. It's not like we're teenagers experimenting. We're 27 and 28 years old! I understand his addiction very well as I have had issues with alcohol, but my real question is why we want other people to do it with us even when we care about them?

Have you ever heard the expression "Misery loves company "? He feels alone and he knows what he is doing is wrong so he wants someone to do it with him so he can feel "not so alone ".

One of the reasons why people do drunks, drink and smoke in the first place is to fit in. They feel lonely. When they are on drugs or drunk, they tend to feel even more lonely. So they try to find other people do drink, smoke or do drugs with so they aren't the only people at the bottom.

Because they don't want to feel like their the only screwed up one in the relationship, people like to bring others down with them so they don't feel so alone in their addiction. It's a psychological problem.

You're assuming the person getting other people to drink with him knows he's addicted.

Misery loves company is why. Abusing drugs and alcohol requires constant reassurance that; 1. We have the appearance of control, can quit anytime WE want but choose to remain stoned no matter what the consequences. 2. The illusion of friendship/ camaraderie in the abuse of drugs and alcohol If you really care about them, you first demonstrate control by stopping drinking at 2 drinks, and see how hurt/ offended they are when you do this. (if you can). I can almost guarantee hurt feelings. You want others to do it with you because on some level, it justifies your own lack of self control.
