Question: Who can advise me where 2 start on becomin a drug&alcohol counsellor ?

Who can advise me where 2 start on becomin a drug &alcohol counsellor ? I want to train to become a drug &alcohol counsellor only the courses that I have looked at are either not in the uk or are too costly ... Does any1 know how i can go about a course that is free or recommend any places where I could be a volunteer ? any help would be grateful appreciated thanx

You will definately need to take some formal training, but unfortunately training can be expensive. Look into doing some distance courses online, I know that here in Canada there are addictions counselling programs, but not sure how that would work for you in the UK. Maybe see about apprenticing, but generally, you will still need that formal training, even before trying to get into a place like that- just because you will be working with an extremely vulnerable population.

Most places that hire drug and alcohol counselors want just that, a certified counselor. That requires (in the USA) a Bachelors degree I believe or a Masters degree in Psychology. There aren't free courses for this. If you want you could get your CNA licence so that you can work in the hospital setting where they are kept and talk with them to try helping them on your own.
