I am at a methadone clinic for heroin addiction and have been there for only about three months. I want to ask my counselor and nurse to taper me off. I am wondering about how long this will take and how severe the withdrawals will be? Also, I have been there for such a short time because I didnt use very long, I got bad pretty fast and checked myself into the clinic, although I was addicted to heroin I hadnt let it completely ruin my life and self .

First, they can evaluate your previous drug use history in deciding how fast or how slow you need to taper off this med. With a slow reduction, you should not get many symptoms, if any. Next, you need ongoing counseling to assist you with new ways of coping with stressor in your life so that you do not fall back into old habits which is very easy to do.
