Ok, what is the affect of 78MG of methadone, and just basically what is it and why would my step dad need to take it. My alcoholic mom says that one drop of it can kill a baby. I just want to get informed. Also, if it isn't prescribed to you, can you take it and get a high? What are the risks/ side effects? Thank you =) |

Methadone is the "gold standard " of treatments for controlling an opioid addiction (heroin, oxycontin, etc.). It is taken daily, usually in a clinic setting and combined with counseling. 78mg. is an "average " dose, though doses can go much higher. It depends on the metabolism of the individual patient. There is no "high " involved, and, in its action on the patient, methadone is endorphin replacement therapy, i.e. it normalizes endorphin systems in the brain damaged by an addiction to opiates. It is safe when used properly, i.e. not mixed with other recreational drugs, like benzodiazapines, which can be a dangerous combo. But by itself it is safe and effective in controlling an opioid addiction and can be taken safely for extended periods, even decades. Only side effect of any consequence is constipation, which is easily controlled through diet, etc. More info can be accessed at methadone.org or lindesmith.org. Kind regards, J.R.
