Question: Is methadone really safe for long term use?

Im going back on methadone for opiate addiction, on a relatively low dose of 40mg where i tend to stay for the maintenance period. What are the physical long term health risks of this medication? What can i do to help my body cope with this drug long term? Cheers. @ replies.... People dont go to jail for methadone, you get dosed at a pharmacy. Methadone is an opiate... I think i made a mistake asking this question on yahoo, i know more than 14 year olds right. Anyone with some brains got input? thank you

Ive been on my clinic for 5 yrs in june. Besides constipation and a 35 lb weight gain from a 95 lb junktank to a 130 lb "tax paying normal person "(dam sour patch kids and 3 somes with ben and jerry) there were no long term side effects for me.But hey Im no dr.I do know from my clinic dr. all the myths about "methadone gets in ya bones " is b s .I commend you for trying to get off your opiate. I tapered from 120 mgs. to 33 mgs.Its my time to get off.And ya ppl are ignorant. Until addiction (god forbid) effects their son,daughter,father or friend, most people we will always say " #$@%ing junkies getting their methadone "shots " at the prisons.Take 1 breath at a time hun
