I have tons of experience dealing with people with addiction issues. Addictions are typically a symptom of a much greater problem. Mental illness is common, especially in the first 90ish days of the initial detox, though the brains have many times become permanently altered. In a nutshell I'd say that if you can't hold your own maybe you shouldn't be involved in such situations. Typically people trying to get better act better, but you are dealing with unstable and somewhat unpredictable addicts. If you have a drunken horse thief, rapist, murderer, victimizer and you sober 'em up, you have a horse thief, rapist, murderer, victimizer with a much more refined game. Mostly it's just a bunch of lost people, but such places are excellent places for victimizers to try to go under the radar for a while. There are no miracles of mental health in those places, just be aware of that. |
